Just days after CEO Elon Musk secured what might be the biggest pay deal in history, the company is losing one of its key engineers. Siddhant Awasthi, who started at Tesla as an intern eight years ago and climbed his way up to lead the Cybertruck and Model 3 programs, has decided to leave the company.
Awasthi announced the departure in a post to LinkedIn:
"I recently made one of the hardest decisions of my life to leave Tesla after an incredible run. Eight years ago, when I started as an intern, I never dreamed I’d one day have the opportunity to lead the Cybertruck program and bring it to reality. It’s been an absolute privilege filled with mostly high-intensity days – working alongside talented, driven, and truly rockstar colleagues across Tesla."
Awasthi hasn’t shared why he’s leaving Tesla or where he’s headed next, though in a post he said he’s “truly excited” for what comes next.
According to his LinkedIn profile, Awasthi led the development roadmap for both the Cybertruck and Model 3, overseeing everything from design and engineering to production and service. He took charge of the Cybertruck program in late 2022, and added the Model 3 to his responsibilities in July 2025. Awasthi holds a Master of Engineering from the University of Cincinnati, earned in 2017.
His exit adds to a growing list of high-level departures from Tesla this year — though it’s the first since the company reported record deliveries, as buyers rushed to take advantage of the final days of the $7,500 federal EV incentive.
