Koenigsegg is running out of records to try and beat with its ever-faster hypercars. So this time it went to Laguna Seca in California and it beat one of its own. Sadair's Spear, the rocketship named for a horse ridden by von Koenigsegg's dad, has gone for a lap around the famous corkscrew and come back with a new one. It set a new fastest laptime for a production car around the iconic 2.2-mile circuit.
Don’t worry if this sounds familiar, but the race to set the fastest lap here has been really close. Because the track is shorter and easier to get to, many hypercar makers have come to Laguna Seca looking to make a name for themselves.
Koenigsegg was the first to set a record for the “fastest street-legal production car” in August 2024. Their Jesko Attack, driven by Markus Lundh, raced on the track for the first time and completed a lap in 1 minute 24.86 seconds.
Later that month, Czinger took its 21C to Laguna Seca and managed a 1:24.75 lap—slightly faster than Koenigsegg. Some people didn’t officially count it, though, because the 21C wasn’t fully in production yet. Before this, Czinger had the record that the Jesko Attack later beat, with a lap about half a second slower set back in 2021.
It didn’t take long for Koenigsegg to take back the lead. A year later, the Sadair’s Spear raced around Laguna Seca in 1:24.16, reclaiming the lap record for street-legal production cars.
If you’re wondering, the McMurtry Spéirling’s 1:18 lap doesn’t count. Although it’s planned for production and can do crazy things like drive upside down, it hasn’t actually gone into production yet.
